Article level metrics hold the promise to help tell a much richer story about a scholars work than a single measure could ever hope to do. A panel of experts will explore what these emerging alternative metrics look like, how they work, and how they are being used. They'll also discuss both the promise and potential pitfalls of applying these measures in the research evaluation, tenure and promotion processes.

SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and the World Bank have announced the speakers for their co-sponsored kickoff event for Open Access Week 2012. The event will take please Monday, October 22, in Washington, D.C. at the World Bank.

Speakers represent a large range of stakeholders in Open Access: researchers, students, scientists, diplomats, and academics. The following speakers will touch upon how Open Access is imperative to their work:

SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and the World Bank have announced they will co-sponsor the kickoff event for Open Access Week 2012 on Monday October 22nd in Washington, DC. The live event will take place at the state of the art World Bank facilities and will host a Liveblog and Webcast for those who cannot attend in person. The event will also be recorded, and be available to the community for use during and after local Open Access events.

A sustainable, Open Access scholarly communication system requires robust, stable sources of funding. One key source of such funding are campus-based Open Access funds - pools of money provided academic institutions specifically earmarked to help authors offset the cost of journal publication. These funds have sprung up on campuses large and small, in colleges and universities across the U.S., Canada, and increasingly, worldwide. How are these funds created?Where are they located and who administers them? Where does the money come from? Are authors using these funds? Where can my institution turn for information on creating such a fund?
