SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) has released a new educational initiative to engage students on the topic of Open Access. “The Right to Research: The student guide to opening access to scholarship” repeats SPARC’s call for student voices to broaden the ongoing discussion of access to research.

Three new sponsors have thrown their support behind the 2009 Sparky Awards, reinforcing the importance of new media and student voices in the global discussion on access to research, and adding momentum to the contest in its final weeks: the New Media Consortium, the Center for Social Media, and the Open Video Alliance. Students have until December 6, 2009 to submit their entries.

The undersigned organizations and institutions write to express our strong concerns with H.R. 3699, the Research Works Act, which has been referred to your Committee. This bill would impede public access to valuable research results from work funded by federal agencies.
